Our annual State of the Social Service Workforce Reports have analyzed social service workforce-related trends and lessons in more than 70 countries to shed light on key workforce trends and showcase innovative and effective workforce strengthening initiatives. 

2023:A Decade of Progress, A Future of Promise

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Alliance, our 2023 State of the Social Service Workforce Report identifies significant progress and accomplishments that have been made to strengthen the social service workforce over the past decade at the global level as well as in three specific countries: Romania, Uganda and Viet Nam. It then identifies remaining and emerging challenges in relation to strengthening the workforce and suggests future initiatives to address them.

2022: The Vital Role of the Social Service Workforce in Humanitarian Contexts

The 2022 State of the Social Service Workforce Report brings to light the critical role of the social service workforce in different humanitarian contexts and across the emergency management cycle. It further highlights the challenges in deploying social service workers in humanitarian contexts and makes recommendations to ensure the social service workforce is better able to support communities and individuals in humanitarian situations.

2020: Responding, Adapting and Innovating During COVID-19, and Beyond

The 2020 State of the Social Service Workforce Report explores the key challenges social service organizations and workers faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. It further explores the lasting impact of the pandemic on organizations and workers and the way they work, including their future needs, their changing roles, and the opportunities the pandemic presented in terms of  innovation and raising awareness of their essential role.

2018: Trends and Recommendations for Strengthening the Social Service Workforce

The 2018 State of the Social Service Workforce Report includes a multi-country, four region review of the state of the social service workforce. Through Alliance-led mappings and assessments in three regions in collaboration with UNICEF, and information from mappings and assessments in a fourth region, this report consolidates trends and data and makes recommendations for better planning, development and support to the workforce. 

2017: Stories of Workforce Efforts to Address Violence Against Children

The 2017 State of the Social Service Workforce Report highlights the many ways that the social service workforce positively impacts the lives of children and families affected by violence. The report uses a storytelling approach to provide insight into workers’ backgrounds, training, education, services provided and organizational factors to demonstrate the value of multidisciplinary approaches to addressing violence against children.  

2016: A Review of Five Years of Workforce Strengthening

The 2016 State of the Social Service Workforce Report assesses the evolution of the social service workforce over the past five years by examining efforts to strengthen and diversify the workforce in eight countries. Since 2010, significant progress has occurred in terms of the introduction of policies and implementation of strategic plans to strengthen the social service workforce.  This report captures what has been accomplished and highlights areas for future intervention. 

2015: A Multi-Country Review

The 2015 State of the Social Service Workforce Report sheds light on key social service workforce data and trends, showcases innovative and effective workforce strengthening initiatives, and highlights the importance of data in this fairly new area of focus. This report was envisioned as a first step among many other global, regional, and national efforts to better describe, depict, and analyze efforts to strengthen the social service workforce.
